Biography:
Piet Pijn (1926-2002) was trained at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague, where he was born. He mainly worked on commissions for churches and monasteries. From 1960 onwards he was also active as a painter, fascinated by sunlight and the beauty of the body. From 1963 to 1984, Pijn taught at the Minerva Academy of Art in Groningen. He is considered the 'patriarch of the Northern Realists', the figurative movement that made Minerva famous. Pijn did not exhibit his work during his lifetime and died in 2002 in Bilthoven. It was not until 2004 that a foundation bearing his name was established to manage and exhibit his work.
