MARCEL BREUER for GAVINA "WASSILY " Model B3, Pair of Bauhaus Leather and Steel Armchairs - Pignolet Gallery

MARCEL BREUER for GAVINA "WASSILY " Model B3, Pair of Bauhaus Leather and Steel Armchairs

Iconic pair of Bauhaus armchairs, model B3 also called Wassily by Marcel Breuer.
Chrome-plated tubular steel frame and thick white saddle-stitched leather.
It is one of the most famous and completely timeless Bauhaus chairs.

There have been several editions of this iconic chair: First a unique license by Thonet from 1920 to 1962 (very rare), then Knoll International then Gavina and Fasem but the qualities and prices differ....
Our edition is old (between 1960 and 1980), we attribute Gavina as issuer for its thick qualitative leather, its dimensions, the quality of the steel and Allen screws.
The steel structures were slightly pitted and the leather stained. They have been fully restored by a leather and upholstery restorer.
They are in good condition, leather cleaned, treated and stained, steel polished.
Note a slight tear visible but restored by sulphurisation on one of the backs (see photo), barely visible.

NB: There is a second pair of armchairs available on request, that is to say 4 possible armchairs.

Biography: Marcel Lajos Breuer, born in 1902 in Hungary and died on July 1, 1981 in New York, was a renowned architect and furniture designer, father of modernism with modular constructions and simple forms.
He graduated from the Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany, spent a year in Paris in an architectural practice and then became a teacher, combining art and technology.
During the Bauhaus period, he created the 'B3 chair', better known as the Wassily Chair, the first chair made of folded steel tubes created in 1925 for Wassily Kandinsky, inspired in part by bicycle handlebars. Still in production, the chair can be assembled and disassembled more easily with bicycle tools. Later, he practised in Berlin, where he designed houses and commercial spaces, as well as many tubular metal furniture pieces, still produced today...
